The Dust bowl
Along with the great depression going on, at the same time the Dust Bowl happened on the Central and Southern Plains. the states that mainly got hit were Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, Nebraska, etc. The Dust Bowl was a huge problem for many farmers. What happened was that the dirt on top of all the farms would get dried out from drought. The farms would then start to crack and the dirt wouldn't be rich anymore to use for crops. Gusts of wind would start to pick up the loose dirt on the farms and would blow it in the air for miles and miles. Not only were the farms getting ruined, but so were the farm houses. Sand would travel through the cracks in the houses and get inside. This wasn't good because all the people living in the houses would then breathe in the dirt. That wasn't healthy for them, especially for little children who got it in their lungs. Because of this tragic event, tons of farmers and their families had to move west (states like California) to see if they could find any other jobs. Now with the great depression and the dust bowl making millions of people losing their jobs, the United States economy wasn't so healthy.
